I love all the hints we’re getting about Frank’s life through this arc. As gnarly-but-charming as he was in Cheap Thrills, I have a real soft spot for this version of him. He’s a really sweet and insightful guy, and genuinely smart. He is such a great example of the fact that education and intellect aren’t the same thing.

He’s even very intellectually curious when it’s clear that he’s not going to be mocked for something like using the wrong words – and a lot of the words he screws up would make him sound pretty dang clever if he hadn’t mixed them up with similar-sounding ones. I really hope to see him get a fair shake. The panel in Kieri’s trailer where he says “Boozhoo, buddy!” with such an open and genuine smile really tugged at my heartstrings.

Why is Anna mad at Frank for knowing it is French toast stick day at the hospital? That’s a weird thing to get mad at someone for knowing!

So, I’m re-reading this chapter, and I want to call out a great bit of plotting detail. When Beth and Jeordie were at the pond ice-skating, she mentioned she got out of gymnastics because she broke her wrist on a jump. Here, Frank explains that her wrist broke so badly because it was on an old break. Excellent payoff, S E. Didn’t notice it in the moment because of the year+ from then to now, but that’s some good shit.
