My mom saying to me the exact words, “As soon as you’re gone they’ll all forget about you anyway, you’re not even a blip on their radar,” was somehow meant to be reassuring, but instead I just grew up with a horrible, anguishing fear of being forgettably insignificant to all the people I loved and never forgot.
Actually, that fear never went away! Oopsie.
Anyway, any parents or future parents reading this right now: Don’t say this kind of shit to your kid lmao
On one hand, Gladys isn’t wrong about how short lived high school friendships CAN be post-graduation.. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean those friendships at that point in your life are meaningless. I say this as someone who still keeps in contact with a handful of high school/college friends. Those relationships can be meaningful/ lifelong, and shouldn’t be dismissed because “you’re just kids/teens”
Is this Gladys way of saying she doesn’t have any meaningful friendships in adulthood? 🤔
Every friend of convenience I ever had has vanished like new fallen snow.
Every friend with whom I had something meaningful in common, like being an outcast, has stuck to me even through periods of absence; we fall back into each other’s lives and stick back to each other like we were never apart.
god this is so aggravating. this spiel from gladys right after beth was having a breakdown over feeling like no one cares and frank trying to convince her that her friends DO care
Anna and Geordie are not “strung out”!! Frank just looks like he is and isn’t technically friends with Beth, he’s friends with Anna. Gladys is being awfully judgemental about Beth’s friends that she (Gladys) doesn’t really know. Sure, high school friendships *can* be short, but why not let Beth enjoy them while she can? It feels like Gladys wants Beth to be miserable whether she stays in Rigsby or goes back to live with her toxic family in Frighly. Poor Beth!
Also, Gladys should be thankful that Anna, Geordie (and Frank) cared enough about Beth to take her to the hospital and stay there until they knew she was OK. What about that fact Gladys?
“i didnt keep any of my friends, so clearly you wont either”
Oh, boy. That brings back some memories.

Does Gladys have *any* friendships? I highly doubt it. She goes to church but otherwise seems to mostly be a SAHM.
“I don’t even talk to anyone I was friends with at your age”
Damn, that explains so much.
deeply sad page : ( great work.
not meant to be a reply, sorry!
