I’ve been really struck by the lack of shouting and screaming and personal attacks in this conversation. Gladys is doing a lot of harm, but the people I knew growing up who were like that tended to be so much more explosive. It’s kind of amazing how much those two things go together in my mind.
….its about her ego. She’s preoccupied about the perceived judgement of others and wants to uproot beth for her own self image. that way when it all blows up her face and beth reacts to the treatment at her family home, gladys can say ‘well i did everything right and look what happened, obviously beth is the one at fault here’
Oh jeez, it’s not even “I want her at home where I can help her” it’s “I don’t want her here, where any success she might experience can’t be claimed by me as a parental success”.

the fact gladys thinks beth will willingly work for her dad without causing any problems, really shows that she doesn’t know beth at all
