This is why I like the writing for this comic. Yes the mother is unpleasant, old fashioned and not a good person but she isn’t a stereotypical bad mom who hates her kid. She just has no idea how the hell to help her and is stuck in her ways. Cuz she’s not wrong in this panel that Beth is doing stuff she shouldn’t be doing but her way of helping would make it so much worse. She’s a bad mother but not because she wants to be but because she doesn’t know how to handle a troubled kid like Beth. Love the writing in this series.
That’s the sad thing – she thinks she *is* helping. (Her plan is to get Beth a job, remove her from bad influences, prevent her from using drugs or having sex, etc.)
She seems to have overall good intentions, but her perspective is way too limited to stop her from doing more harm than good. It’s sad all around.
In all honesty Beth’s mom is making a really good case here. I get that Beth is going through a lot right now but being as destructive (both towards herself and outwardly like punching walls) as she is is indicative that this plan isn’t working out like intended. I doubt she would be happy returning home but I can see here where it’s becoming a grim possibility that Beth is just a lost cause, which is sad because this is a reality for a lot of neurodivergent people; people give up on them because they’re too hard to predict and be around for very long due to volatility brought on from lacking supportive families and difficulty in accessing the “right” treatment. Really like how sensitively the comic portrays things.
wow this is giving me flashbacks, incredible writing here! moms who are like this suck, violating her kids privacy to hurl accusations and enact more control without respite is going to break beths already depleted trust so much. I hope she doesnt blame her aunt or that it doesnt hurt their relationship, its incredible that beth has been able to actually live her life with her aunt for these years. in this time and between her aunt and jeordies mom shes been able to find good role models and happiness…. gladys dont take her life from her because you dont approve……
