Really superb writing with these two the whole story. We know that Gladys hasn’t been a very good parent to Beth, but despite her failings, she tries. Shane’s already written her off; if he can’t find it in himself to give a shit about one of his kids, you know there’s not much in there for the others, either.
Honestly their interaction makes me wonder what lead them to get married in the first place, because this just looks like a marriage of convenience for them both. Maybe there was some real affection there once but what lead to the infidelity and breakdown of communication? Maybe I’m reading too much into this. IDK :/
I have NO clue if this is still the case for Rigsby, WI, so take this with a grain of salt- but in the comic’s precursor, Cheap Thrills, it was pretty much a shotgun wedding when Gladys got pregnant, and Shane didn’t want to be disowned (and thus lose out on that sweet, sweet inheritance) for having a kid out of wedlock.

I’m gonna speculate that in the Rigsby, WI Universe, Shane probably charmed the hell out of Gladys.
He is a Flaming Narcissist, and they are good at charming and manipulating people.
