I love Alice’s dialogue in this scene, both what she is saying and what she isn’t. First of all, an adult seeing through Beth’s father is such a nice bit of validation for her after all the belittling she gets in his home (I only hope she’s aware of how much her aunt agrees with her). But then there’s the fact that Alice cites the father as the problem first. Whether she’s waiting for the next page or not willing to talk to an acquaintance about it at all, she’s faster to blame her brother-in-law than her sister.
