been thinking this for a while now but god, beth’s family life is horribly lonely. even the nicer family members just aren’t on the same page as her. and it seems so far that no one else in this family sees beth’s dad for what he is like she does. they’re all ready to make excuses for him, which just isolates her further. like most of her problems today are caused by her dad and she can’t even complain about it. just an awful situation to be in.
Sad part as well is that Beth’s mom isn’t being completely awful as a parent but her better instincts get overruled by the dad. She’s still definitely got the wrong mindset for dealing with someone but her heart is much more visibly in the right place at least.
I mean so far Beth’s mom isn’t GREAT at all, but… she *seems* somehow *better* than her previous incarnation in Cheap Thrills. I just think she could be a better mom without her stupid husband’s influence. Because she did great until he told her to MAKE Beth go to church and confess. Just my thoughts. I do like how we see other people influence Beth’s mom, like her husband and the mother-in-law. I wish she would stand her ground more, she’d be a better person for it.
I thought this comic reminded me of something ! I just started (and finished) reading it today and I couldn’t help feeling like I had read something similar quite a few years ago when I was still at college. So this is why, it’s a reboot of Cheap Thrills !
Which I already found good, but this new version is really great. The art is wonderful (if I remember correctly, it has matured compared to Cheap Thrills, which makes sense : quite a few years went by since then); and the writing/storyline/setting/character building strike really true.
Also I was a teenager only a few years before the characters were (I finished high school at the end of the 1990s), so the musical references etc. as well as the feeling of growing up at that time speak to me a lot (it’s a bit nostalgic for me too to read about it). But I think this story can resonate with anybody regardless of their age, be they teenagers of today or much older like I am, or even older (like my parents, who have a lesbian daughter, a gay son, and 3 straight daughters, a granddaughter and another one on the way : we’re a big happy family ).
Yeah, me too. But I like that this is so relatable, maybe because the comics I was reading just before this one felt irritatingly unrealistic, and probably also because the problems I had as a teenager weren’t as heavy maybe…
If you’re reading this comic, maybe you have recommandations for other good webcomics.
Could you give me some titles? It’s been a while since I’ve had a webcomic reading phase, so I’m a bit out of touch with what there is out there nowadays.
Thanks !

Sheesh. No “I heard you got upset. What’s wrong? Are you okay?” just “I heard you got upset…GO APOLOGIZE FOR IT!”

this is a little too relatable, the relentlessness of it, you jist cant catch a break

It’s an old one so you might have read it, but maybe Octopus Pie?
