Commenting for the first time. It fascinates me how most of the adults act in this comic.
Eric’s dad, Beth’s mom, pretty much all the adults in this chapter except for Jeordie’s parents. They go out of their way to be openly antagonistic to these kids to the point where you can argue that the characters we focus on act more like actual adults and the teen characters we don’t that act shitty are just emulating the behavior they see around them. Rigsby seems to be a town ruled by banal cruelty. Maybe that’s because it’s set in the Midwest 20 years ago, but it still feels…contemporary?
Interrogates the white girl, pointedly ignores the Black boy, says people who get shot on accident during hunting season ruin other people’s lives. What a prize prick.
Did you miss the comment “your parents know you’re out here with this boy”? If you have been in this situation it’s pretty easy to read the room. Just saying.
At this point I kinda feel like people who aren’t getting it are not getting it on purpose, lol. It is incredibly clear what this chapter has been about.
tbh he’s not wrong in one sense, they REALLY shouldn’t be fucking around out there without some safety orange. And I hope that’s not foreshadowing to a terrible tragedy.
Who needs hunting orange when you have Beth’s hair? Jk. I have had these convo’s in the wrong woods and it’s always a weird reminder that some ppl value hunting over kids having some kind of outlet and privacy
I’ve always liked Beth in Cheap Thrills, but I *love* her in Rigsby. Her personality is more defined. I am so enthralled by how quickly her demeanor shifts from open-hearted, compassionate goofball with her friends, to cold and completely closed-off around adults and other authority figures. It speaks volumes about her life so far.
I agree! I hope this comic continues and we get to see more of Beth’s backstory revealed in this universe. I love how deep we get to delve into the characters in Rigsby. CT was good, Rigsby is another level.
I’ll admit, the hunter ain’t acting in the best of ways. He could be, like most of the other adults, less dickish. But he’s also not wrong. Walking around in the woods during hunting season is VERY dangerous.

He’s only addressing Beth because Beth is the only one talking back.
She has every right to, mind. But that is how a conversation works.

I really don’t know how you could read THIS far into this comic and ignore the commentary on racism in small towns. Maybe re-read it, slowly.
