I think this goes beyond Anna. Throughout the chapter, you don’t see Kierie in any of the flashbacks–all those technicolor portions of the chapter have a resounding hole in them. Anna talks about living with her Mom in Anthony’s house, then with another one of her mom’s boyfriends, but Kierie is never included in that. Was she with her Dad? When Anna’s mom had a new life, did she get discarded in favor of the “smarter” and “better” kid?
These are just things I think about man. I’m an older sibling to an incredibly talented younger sister; neither of our parents are (super) f*cked up but there’s still some animosity there in terms of things she got to do that I didn’t. It’s hard to think about what things would be like if we lived in a situation like this.
Kierie overreacted by tossing Anna out, and she’s overreacting now, but I can see why. It seems Kierie resents that Anna didn’t have to suffer as much in life, even though both girls were helpless in what they were dealt. Still, Anna at least had a glimpse of stability, which is why she’s depressed for having lost that experience, while Kierie resents Anna because she didn’t get to have that at all. Besides that, Anna takes her studies seriously, and if she keeps at it, she won’t have to constantly work overtime like Kierie, who seems like she’s given up on herself. I think Anna made those “lol ur stupid” jokes the night before just as jokes, just being a bratty little sister, not because she actually meant it, but of course, that isn’t how Kierie sees it.
I’m frustrated with Kierie for taking things out on an undeserving Anna, but I also get where she’s coming from. It’s not right, but I get it.
FINALLY, we get to see Kierie’s point of view without pot and beer coloring it. Guess she’s feeling kind of ignored and neglected like Anna. And there’s some jealousy there, too. Anyway, we get some real character development for her!
she’s a fucking kid kyrie
