Chapter: Chapter 2: Burn it down

Man, this page is infuriating. When the adults in her life have clearly failed her, why would you still insist on having one of them fill out the form? But God blesses you so it’s all good, right? The problem with following the rules is that you usually end up screwing yourself over.

To be fair, the woman DID tell Anna of places where she could get food without having to fill out paperwork. She has to do her job or risk getting in trouble herself, so no matter how you look at it, there are hoops to have to jump through, but she’s just the messenger.

Okay Rose, but how is Anna supposed to get to those places? “Up in Breuer” and “Bear Lake on the reservation” are a pretty far walk/bike ride for a teen without a car in the middle of a Wisconsin winter. Given that all the reservations in Wisconsin are upstate, that’s -30 some days.

Also if these other places have open door policies that don’t require paperwork, why can’t the local pantry? It’s asinine. “We need you to fill out this form, but here, there are other places miles away that won’t make you do that.”

They’re also probably run by right-leaning Christians, so “open door” is likely situational.

To Hollis- Anna has friends with cars, like Jeordie. She also eats at Beth and Erik’s houses. The local pantry requires paperwork, but other places don’t. Yes, they’re farther, but it’s not like Anna is without options and now has no choice but to starve to death. That’s life. I don’t like it anymore than you do, but the woman on this page tried to help Anna by offering her other options for food, as well as also letting her have food this time despite no paperwork. Like I said before, there are always hoops to jump through, but don’t shoot the messenger.

LOVING chapter 2 so far. Anna and Frank were always established as good friends in Cheap Thrills, but it’s nice to see here exactly how that came to be.

Kinda wondering why Anna just doesn’t fill it out herself, and pretend her mom did.
Do they need her mom to actually come in to validate it?

I mean, I know that’s technically forgery, but you do what you gotta do in shitty situations. Especially when it doesn’t harm anyone.

i cant really see anna doing that tbh. i feel like she’d be uncomfortable since there’s a chance it wouldn’t work, and forgery on that stuff gets you in HUGE trouble since it’s considered taking advantage of the system (even though it’s not).

It’s the attestation that matters, and Anna’s mom seems like the sort of person that would screw her over for spite.
