God, I love Frank.
When he picked up on what was going on with Beth and Jeordie in the diner and just went “oh! interesting”, that was a great signal as to his emotional intelligence, and this is a great payoff for that. Beth really needed to hear this from SOMEBODY, and I don’t think she would accept it from anyone she knows super well.
Frank is not wrong, but also Beth just broke her arm after being told that she’s getting sent away to live at a place that caused her to self-destruct before. It’s like telling someone bitten by a wolf that maybe crying in pain will attract more wolves and they should stop making it a whole thing. I think Ann understand that, and Frank is like, protective of Ann, but essentially his timing is a bit off – if Beth wouldn’t apologise once her crisis is solved, his rant would be more reasonable.
The issue is that she had been in that spiral before she broke her arm with how she was treating and trash talking Jeordie to Anna and Kieri and was in her “I’m awful no one will want to be around me” spiral despite Jeoedie pointing out how he had spent a semester’s worth of time around her and how he hasn’t even had any free time currently. The broken arm may have exacerbated it a bit but she doing it before the break. Anna even conceded that Jeordie had a point with her attitude.
I’m not sure you wanna be relying on Ann’s opinion as your reference point, most recent comment she made on Beth/Jordie situation is that Jeordie sucks and being a piece of shit.
beth’s face in the 2nd to last panel is so perfect lmfao. Frank’s sharing the good medicine, the stuff shes gotta hear, but dear god its a pain xD its not the easiest pill to swallow to get read like a book about your self destructive habits. frank is a real one for this
I think this is an interesting approach. Normally I’d think he was being unnecessarily mean; like others have said, she was spiraling after was having all of her stability yanked away from her. I went through something similar when I thought I’d escaped a bad situation, full crashout and everything. But.
We haven’t seen jerky behavior from Frank before. He’s a weirdo and a bit jaded, sure, but he’s a quiet, gentle dude regardless of how people have treated him. And we can see from his body language and the size and color of his dialogue that he’s not yelling. He’s just seeing someone acting out what I assume is the way he feels inside and suppresses. He’s also sticking up for someone who they both adore; he could be much, much meaner in those circumstances.
I don’t even feel like this is “tough love.” I feel like he’s giving her exactly the warning she needs. He’s not even saying SHE is being annoying; he’s saying her behavior is. He also didn’t say she was an unlikable words-I-can’t-type-here; he’s saying she’s convinced herself she is. He’s a good friend.
Having been on a morphine drip myself before, if that’s what they’ve got her on, then I have a feeling she’s going to be progressively more calm and receptive as this scene continues…
