well okay ouch
Don’t use your husband as a threat, ugh
I hate it when a mom or dad says, “Continue to behave like that, I’m going to get your mom/dad.” Like, really? You can’t discipline yourself, you need someone else to do it for you? (I’m a parent, by the way, and made it a point to never do that, it’s ridiculous.)
I see the point, though. The dad is off in la-la-land not helping in the slightest.
100% agree.
Even threatening to punish isn’t good parenting. It teaches children not to take their parents seriously.
Not that I approve of corporal punishment either, but it would be better for Gladys to smack them with no warning than to make threats that aren’t going to be taken serious.
Best thing would be to send them off to separate corners of the house.
Oh absolutely, but to be clear I don’t mean that disciple = corporal punishment. Discipline is just correcting behavior and do exactly what you just mentioned, for sure. Mmmaybe she does, all the time… but it looks like she really wants her husband’s support and he’s probably on the phone with his side chick.😄 That’s really frustrating when a parent doesn’t pull their weight, and they do have quite a handful of kids together. It really breaks my heart. I do kind of feel for Gladys in this situation.
Again, I totally hear you.
I once saw this episode of Oprah which featured the woman who took “spare the rod and spoil the child” literally.
This woman carried a wooden dowel around and whenever her child “did something wrong” she would tap or mildly strike the child with it.
A film crew followed this family around and they ran some video clips. On the average, this woman struck her child every 30 seconds the two were in the same room.
Of course, the audience was aghast. What made it worse, was the child definitely was all Stockholm Syndrome from this treatment.
She said that Mommy does it “…because she loves me.”
(audience moans in dismay)
And now the countdown timer starts until she takes her unresolved problems with him out on the children…
This has been going on since the first child was born.
Oh of course, the counter resets with every little incident though, so there’s always new trauma and drama.
What’s “Frighly”?
I’m 90% sure Frighly is where Bethany’s family live. Bethany lives in Rigsby, WI (hence the title of the comic) with her aunt (Alice, her mom’s sister) because she (Beth) doesn’t get along with her mom (Gladys). In Cheap Thrills, Gladys signed parental rights over Beth to Alice. I’m pretty sure that is also true in this version.
*The rest of Beth’s family lives*. Gladys, Beth’s dad (he’s a cheating a-hole and an inactive father, I don’t recall his name, nor do I care to learn it), and Beth’s seven siblings. Beth is the oldest (I’m pretty sure).
I think Beth has two old-er siblings! I can’t remember their names though, but I’m p sure it’s a boy and a girl.
I don’t think it’s anything as official in Rigsby WI – the way Alice talks about it with Liz earlier in this chapters it’s “all very informal”. There’s also a scene of Gladys getting mad with Alice for allowing Beth to take the pill – saying that she didn’t have the right to make that decision because she’s not the parent. And I don’t remember if it came up explicitly but I think the worry that Gladys might just take Beth back home is like, in the room at least.
Anyways, I always enjoy the Cheap Thrills comparisons because I haven’t read it (yet) and it’s fun to see what lines up and what doesn’t. And it’d be nice for Beth & Alice if signing over parental rights is where it’s going! But I feel like there’s some rough waters ahead yet :’)
Thanks! I was wondering if it was a typo for “Friday” or something 🙂
Good ol’Frighly, in between Nordest and Summer Lagoon Place.
oh sit, finally reached the end so far! good shit!
